Great Stirrup Cay travel guide and vacation resources
Great Stirrup Cay is a small island in the Bahamas. The northern part is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line. It is 2 Miles long. This private island is a popular stop on many of NCL's Caribbean cruises throughout the year. The southern part features a helicopter airfield (with a sign reading "Great Stirrup Cay International Airport"), a large area without vegetation and numerous concrete blocks which seem to have been a military installation once, and an old lighthouse. Great Stirrup Cay is a part of the Berry Islands located approximately 65 miles north of Nassau, Bahamas, the capital. Located north of Great Harbour Cay and east of Little Stirrup Cay, it is the home of an 1863 lighthouse. During the reign of William IV, the cay had visions of grandeur; Williamstown was laid out in his name and a Customs house was erected. The anticipated prosperity did not drop anchor here, but the wreck of an unidentified ship lies just offshore. The cove that complements a half-mile strip of beach was named Bertram’s Cove after a cook who died of fever on the ship in July 24, 1834.
