Great Stirrup Cay climate - a reason to plan your trip now

The weather in The Bahamas is an added treat for travelers. Although the chain is made up of over 700 low-lying islands stretching from just east of Florida down into the Caribbean, most of the islands have very similar climates. The Bahamas' temperatures are moderated by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. And because The Bahamas are closer to continental North America - and thus more easily effected by North American cold air systems - they are slightly cooler than other Caribbean islands. Average temperatures in the Bahamas range from 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (27 to 32 degrees Celsius) in the summer to 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 27 degrees Celsius) in the winter. The northern Bahamian islands can be even a little cooler. Winds across The Bahamas keep vacations cool in the daytime and help lower the temperatures at night. Although The Bahamas is located in the hurricane belt that lies across most of the Caribbean, many storms bypass the island chain and instead circle below it before heading north toward the United States. Of course, the islands are equipped to respond to a storm if one does hit. Modern technology offers some reassurance to travelers who want to visit the Caribbean during the hurricane season, which lasts from June to November. Because hurricanes can be tracked from the time they form, travelers should have no problem preparing and canceling travel plans if necessary. While the high season is exciting, the off-season may be more indicative of the true Caribbean. With diminished crowds, a less-hurried, more quintessentially Caribbean way of life prevails. During the off-season in The Bahamas, midday temperatures may rise to an uncomfortable 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit, but the Atlantic trade winds keep the mornings, afternoons, and evenings extremely pleasant. Hotels and resorts may reduce their services and diminish their staff during the off-season, and some tours or activities may be closed altogether. Hotels also reserve their major repairs or renovations for the off-season, so it's a good idea to call ahead and make sure you won't be staying in the midst of a construction site. On the flip side, traveling in the off-season can be much cheaper. Hotels cut their rates from 20 to 60 percent, and tours and shops may cut prices to remain competitive. There is easier access to public transportation, tee times and golf courses, tennis courts, water sports, and other activities. Flights and accommodations are easier to book. You may even be able to walk into a nice restaurant without reservations and be seated. This is a good time for families to travel because it's easier to keep track of children and there are less crowds to fight. The atmosphere is more cosmopolitan in the off-season as well, since a greater percentage of the tourists during this time are European.
