Great Stirrup Cay attractions -not only sun & beach
As you waken with the sunrise, you see the ship approaching two small islands. Out come the binoculars for a closer look as we enjoy cappuccino on our balcony—two "people movers" are heading toward the "Spirit". A nice view of a small cove with clear green water, chairs and umbrellas waiting for the sun worshippers. At 8am we get the "go-ahead" sign and the transfers begin. The lobby is set up to sell you anything you may need—sunglasses, hats, lotion, cover-ups, snorkeling masks and cameras. Pick up your towels and board the ferry for a 5 minute ride—easy-on easy-off access. This is quite an undertaking for NCL. All food and drinks are brought ashore and later removed. The first few ferries are half full. Everyone smiling and staking claim to the perfect seat—front row lounges with umbrellas. By 9:30am, full ferries are arriving. People rush off, pulling their kids along "on a mission" they need to get one of the few remaining prize locations!! By 11am it's like Jones Beach on Long Island, NY on a 96°F Sunday afternoon!! Great Stirrup Cay is your private island for the day with plenty to do—the cove is protected so the water is calm, the sandy beach has plenty of chairs and umbrellas but very few lounges and everyone wants a front row seat. Remember the great location you claimed at 8am, well… now there are chairs and towels all the way to the water line and the tide is coming in!! Hammocks and picnic tables further back provide another shady option, appealing more to the older guests. A band plays all afternoon, bars are set up selling beer, drinks and smoothies. Snorkeling equipment, floaties and family size fun floats are for rent. The floats are floats are $10, family size are $20, and $29 for snorkel equipment (better off to buy a it on-board for $14.95). You can snorkel from shore or take a free guided tour every hour. A couple of rays were spotted early before the crowds came. If snorkeling—do so early, since the visibility gets rather cloudy with 1500 playing in the water. A small local crafts market is set up, everything but this can be charged to your account—massages $15 for 15 minutes, para sailing $79 per person for a tandem ride and hair braiding with a per braid charge. A barbecue is set up with burgers, dogs, chicken and pizza along with a choice of salads, veggies, rice, beans, fruit and cake for dessert. It's a fun beach day for everyone. By noon a few people are headed back and the boats become more full as the afternoon wears on. All aboard at 5pm with lots of sunburns!!!. It was a fun day, very crowded but as I write this review I'm smiling and wishing I were there instead of here in the drizzly wet weather. |
